Remembering Day 1 at Beaupre School, 1922

Register 1922

Mark the date! It will be a special day in Onoway when the Onoway and District Historical Guild recognizes the 100th anniversary of the opening of Beaupre School. On June 10, starting at 1:00 p.m. a ceremony uneiling a memorial sign will be held in front of the Old Brick School.

When the school opened in February 1922, there was room to accommodate 80 scholars in the two classrooms. Some of the families which had students attending this impressive school at the beginning were Ablett, Alsop. Armitstead, Blacklock, Duegau, Dwyer, Fitzpatrick, Gray, Green, Greer, Guenette, Gunn, Hughes, Jago, Jolly, Ledger, Lee, Manning, Moren, Nelligan, Parker, Sedore, Sibbald, Spreen, Squires, Starr, Turnbull, Walker, Woodruff, Young and Yeoman. The Onoway Museum's collection of school registers is remarkably complete but one or two (especially of these early years) are missing so this list of families may be incomplete.

The Historical Guild invites the public and especially the descendants of family members who were students at Beaupré School in its early years to join the celebration. Everyone is welcome to join in this step back in time – before school buses, electric lights, running water, indoor toilets. Save the date!

Miss L. Husband’s 1922 register for grades I–III showed 18 students in February and 36 by the end of June. The big new school attracted students from small surrounding schools! Mr. Bramley’s grade IV–X class had 38 students, age 9 - 16.
